George things to do
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Victoria Heights Reptile and Bird Park just outside of George. This is not just any Reptile and Bird Park. I found the large variety of reptiles and birds astonishing!

Halfway through the Bird Park, I realized just how uninformed I am where it comes to the bird species! Can there really be so many? Imagine more than 50 species of doves… A variety of poultry – The owner of the Park, Hennie Haasbroek, has been breeding Show Poultry for the past 32 years. A number of South African Champions were bred by him and many of these are also residents of the Bird Park – and I thought that chicken are just there to lay eggs.Water birds I thought only feature in Children’s books and fairytales. Sparrows, Parrots, even Loeries and exotic bird species!

At first I was exited and bit frightened by the thought of visiting a reptile park. Can you blame me? Soon I was quite at ease walking around in the park with Nick Kolberg, who told me more about these animals. All the reptiles are in safe enclosures resembling their natural habitat. For me it was the first time that I saw many of these reptiles in real life! Puff Adders, Rattle Snakes, Moll Snakes, Leguans and even a Bull Frog! For the sake of taking photographs for their website I was even taken into one of the Anaconda enclosures… some of these more that 5 meter in length!!!

But this is not all – the Reptile Park is also home to Piet the talking Crow, a number of monkeys and other farm animals including a Swiss Milk Goat! Oh and I almost forgot about the baby monkey! He hides on his daddy’s back – I have included a photograph of the two!
Well, what an interesting morning! Not only did I have great fun and the opportunity to see birds and reptiles that I have heard and read about, in real life. I also learned a great deal about these species! The rates for tours of the Reptile Park and Bird Park are very reasonable – now any one can afford this amazing experience!
