The Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo project has grown wings!

New partner could open the world for the winner of the Miss Garden Route 2010 contest.
The Miss Garden Route competition, which was originally started as a beauty contest and then moved on to become a “Beauty with A Purpose” project, is getting a new partner, which could open up the world for the 2010 winner.

Winner of Miss Garden Route 2010 to be embraced in the Miss Earth S A Competition

“Beauty with a Mission” is the slogan of the Miss Earth competition and national director of Miss Earth South Africa, me Catherine Constantinides, has reached out to the local competition to embrace the winner of Miss Garden Route 2010 in the Miss Earth SA competition.

Denise Schoeman from Knysna, was  a runner-up in the Miss Earth SA 2008 competition

“We are really excited about this dimension of our competition” coordinator and organizer Ms Tryana Potgieter told us. “One of our previous winners, the beautiful Denise Schoeman from Knysna, was also a runner-up in the Miss Earth SA 2008 competition. Our girls are the cream of the crop and they deserve to be given the opportunity to conquer the world” she added.

The Miss Earth competition will take place in Vietnam during November – December 2010

The Miss Earth competition, which has been running for 10 years, is considered one of the three largest beauty contests in the world. The 2010 competition will take place in Vietnam during November and December this year.

The Gala Evening for Miss Garden Route 2010 will take place 25 September

Ms Constantinides plans on attending the gala evening of Miss Garden Route on Saturday 25 September at the prestigious Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Club and she will most probably be escorted by Chanel Grantham (20), Miss Earth SA 2009. Chanel is also known as the Green Ambassadress of South Africa.

According to Chanel, from Cape Town, she was drawn to the competition not because of the glamour, but because of what it stands for. “We do get our hands dirty. We go into communities and actively make a difference” she said.

Louise Muller Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo 2009 opens her heart to Safe Houses

“And that is exactly what our girls also do” Potgieter added and said that the 12 finalist visit the safe house for battered women and children, as well as other identified projects in the Southern Cape. Louise Muller, Miss GR & KK 2009 has been back to some of the shelters on numerous occasions. Even when she was only a finalist, she baked heart shaped cookies and wrapped them as gifts for the women in the safe houses. She has also been back to donate clothing and little luxury gifts to the women.

“Our beauty with a purpose combined with Christina’s beauty with a mission can only be a winning recipe for making our country a better place” Potgieter added.

The 2010 winner will be invited to take part as a finalist in the Miss Earth SA competition.

Old Post Office Tree in Mossel  Bay.  Dias Museum Complex in Mossel Bay has a wealth of places of historical interest. The most famous  is possibly the Old Post Office Tree. This massive Milkwood tree which is over 500 years old is where the 16th century sailors left messages for each other in a shoe hanging from the tree.

Mossel Bay Shell Museum

The complex consists of three buildings; the Granary, Maritime- and Shell museums.
The Granary serves as the reception and info center of the complex with conference facilities.
The Maritime museum contains a life size replica of the ship on which Dias sailed into South African waters in 1488. The Shell museum houses a wide variety of shells and portrays for instance, the history of the use of shells by man over the centuries. Live animals are displayed in aquarium.

Visit the spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo, the Cango Caves, is 29 km from Oudtshoorn in the Cango Valley. For years the Cango Caves have been on of the most popular tourist attractions  and things to do in the area. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well-known Swartberg Mountains, you will find a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like the bridal couple, glass flower fantasy, weird cango candle and the hanging shawl. The system of tunnels and chambers in the Cango Caves stretch for over 4 km.

Cango Caves offers a choice of Standard (easy) or Adventure Tours. All tours are lead by experienced, knowledgeable and accredited Caves Guides. The Cango Caves has a restaurant, a curio shop and an interpretive centre where one can learn more about the history and geology of the caves. Natures Valley Hiking Trail

Beginning in Natures Valley and ending 60-km further at either the Storms River Bridge or Village, this six day, unidirectional trail takes hikers through the heart of the Tsitsikamma Mountains . Shorter variations (2, 3, 4 or 5 days) are possible as each overnight hut has its own unique access route with safe parking at the start. Optional equipment porterage now provides hikers with the chance of having all their equipment transported between over-night huts. Other activities now permitted include vehicular and mountain bike access to certain over-night huts and informative guided day walks.

Tsitsikamma Falls Adventures near Storms River offers you an adventure experience you will never forget. Enjoy the magnificent view of the indigenous plants and of three waterfalls during your “Waterfall Zipline Tour”. The Zipline Tour is better known as a “Foofi Slide”. Our rides are longer, safer and faster and offer a lot more to see. There is a total of have 8 slides of which the longest is 211m, 165m and the others average 80-90m. All equipment and guides are supplied and the tour takes about 2 hours.

Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains near Oudtshoorn, you will find a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like the bridal couple, glass flower fantasy, weird cango candle and the hanging shawl. In totality, the extensive system of tunnels and chambers in the Cango Caves stretch for over 4 km. The section open to visitors, about 1km, takes place as part of supervised tours.

Visit the Wildebraam Berry Estate, situated in the Hermitage Valley about 1.5km outside Swellendam in the beautiful Hermitage Valley. The berry types they farm with include Blackberries and Young berries.

The private cellar produces a range of delicious liqueurs including Young berry, Honey, Aniseed, Rooibos, Peppermint, Lemon and Hazelnut. The farm kitchen produces an array of Liquored fruits, jams, dessert syrups, chutneys, relishes, pickles and gifts which can all be sampled and purchased in the infamous “tasting room”. Products are ideal as corporate gifts.
From mid November to end December it is berry picking time and you can pick your own berries!
Visitors are welcomed in the tasting room.
